From Sea Abyss to Deep Space: “extreme” solutions from Unimec in the September issue of “Organi di Trasmissione” magazine

Organi di Trasmissione” is the only Italian magazine that, since 1970, offers an in-depth analysis of the main trends and issues of the mechanical, electro-mechanical and power transmission industries.

Each month, the magazine offers insights and technical opinions from world-class experts in the field, positioning itself as an indispensable tool for designers and engineering departments in a variety of technical fields.

In this September issue, the cover of the magazine is dedicated to Unimec with a tagline inspired by the Unimec Citius program: “Faster, Higher, Stronger… more Unimec”.

Inside the magazine, the main articleFrom Sea Abyss to Deep Space”, describes some unique Unimec solutions in extreme environments.

Some examples?

9,000 feet deep down at the bottom of the ocean, a tiny robot works incessantly to reclaim old gas ducts and electrodes, cutting them into manageable pieces with the help of a special saw: this saw is controlled by custom Unimec Screw Jacks, specifically developed to withstand the massive 4,367 psi water pressure and corrosion caused by the marine environment.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Unimec is also up there in Space, the quintessential extreme environment: one of Unimec’s Bevel Gear Reducers, made in full stainless-steel construction, including the bearings and all of the internal gears, and finished with a special ion-nitriding process, is currently operating on the International Space Station.

Another Space-related application, although it will be installed on Earth, is a complex system of Screw Jacks and Reducers used on the ELT (Extremely Large Telescope), the world’s largest telescope in history that will be installed in Chile in 2024. Unimec products used in the ELT application will be completely lubrication-free, UV-resistant, capable of withstanding significant temperature variations between night and day, and will come with a certified lifetime of 50 years!

Know-how, experience, technical knowledge, production capacity, a reliable supply chain and a fleet of unique, proprietary, state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing machines: these are the tools that Unimec has been employing since its own inception back in 1982, to manufacture the highest quality products capable of exceeding the demands of the most extreme and challenging environments on Earth, at the bottom of the ocean, and in deep Space.
